Rice output faces cut for third year　三年連続米の生産調整

The farm ministry plans to tell rice producer groups and related sectors to reduce the output of rice in 2007 to about 8.28 million tons, down 50,000 tons from 2006, in a bid to maintain prices of the grain amid continued falls in consumption, ministry sources said Thursday.
It will be the third consecutive yearly harvest cut.

（試訳）農水省は米の生産者団体及び関係諸部門に対し2007年は8億2,800万トンの米の生産調整を行う計画であると語った。これは2006年に比べ5万トンの削減で、引き続く米の消費の減少の中で穀物価格を維持するためだと、同省関係者は木曜日に語った。

The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry is expected to present the plan to a farm minister's advisory panel Friday before formally deciding on it.

（試訳）農林水産省は正式決定の前に、この計画を農水省の諮問機関に対して金曜日に提出する見込みである。

This year's rice production is estimated at 8.40 million tons, 40,000 tons lower than demand, in order to keep rice prices from falling. Stocks, however, remain high because not all farmers abide by the targets.
The government therefore plans to maintain stockpiles at the level it already had by the end of June, about 770,000 tons, the sources said.

The government will buy about 300,000 tons from the market by the end of the year, while withdrawing the same amount of rice from its stockpiles for sale in the market, they added.
