The court in Saipan on Wednesday turned down a request to release Kazuyoshi Miura, who was recently arrested here in connection with the 1981 shooting of his wife in Los Angeles.

Saipan court rejects Miura's bid for release

SAIPAN (Kyodo) The court in Saipan on Wednesday turned down a request to release Kazuyoshi Miura, who was recently arrested here in connection with the 1981 shooting of his wife in Los Angeles.

The court accepted the argument of local prosecutors that Miura, 60, should not be released because his arrest on the island was legal. His lawyers have argued that it will run counter to the spirit of a law prohibiting double jeopardy if their client is transferred to California.

Miura was acquitted by the Supreme Court in Japan of involvement in the murder of his wife, Kazumi, 28, who was shot in the head in the 1981 shooting and died about one year later after being transferred to Japan.

Before the local court's decision, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Tuesday he will send a letter to Saipan authorities requesting Miura's transfer to the United States.

Miura was arrested in Saipan, an island in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, on Feb. 22.

A signed letter requesting transfer from the California governor and a letter of intent signed by the governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are necessary for Miura to be transferred from Saipan to California.
